West Dunbartonshire Conservatives support council tax cut proposal

Conservative Westminster candidate for West Dunbartonshire, Martyn McIntyre, has welcomed a new policy announcement from the Scottish Conservatives which would see £150 cut from every council tax bill in Scotland.

Martyn said, "During these difficult economic times, this cut in council tax would benefit everyone in West Dunbartonshire, with even bigger cuts for older pensioners."

"Alex Salmond says he can find £281 million to subsidise his new proposed Local Income Tax (LIT). Rather than using this money to change the system, the Scottish Conservatives would use this money to cut the council tax for everyone."

"The SNP Government says that under their LIT, 80% of Scottish households would be no worse off. However, they would have to inject £281 million in subsidy to achieve this. The real comparison is not between a subsidised LIT and an unsubsidised council tax, but between both bills cut by the same subsidy."

"If the SNP Government really can find £281 million in efficiency savings from the running of Government to subsidise their LIT proposals, the Scottish Conservatives can show how it could be spent better. In these pressing economic times, we don't need a new tax on work, we need a tax cut for all."
